Course Description

SK401 Sanskrit: Grammar and Syntax II 3(3-0-6)
Prerequisite SK301
Conjugation of the mathematic verb classes II, V and VIII; more declensional cases of nouns and pronouns of the three genders with vowel and consonant endings; the denominative; the imperfect tense; the conditional tense; the periphrastic future; the locative and genitive absolutes; the future passive participles (gerundive); the present participles; further forms of bahuvrīhi samāsa; the avyayībhāva samāsa; possessive and adjective suffixes; past active participles.

EN103 English Composition 3(3-2-2)
Prerequisite EN101
Study and practice in the forms of writing necessary for all college writing. Students will also be introduced to library skills.

A practical course designed to acquaint students with the process of public speaking and the basic principles involved in speech preparation and presentation.

BH203 History of Buddhism in India 3(3-0-6)
The course focuses on the following aspects: the extent of the spread of Buddhism during the time of the Buddha and its impact on the contemporary society, Buddhist Councils and their importance in the history of Buddhism, formation of the Buddhist canonical literatures and its oral transmission by the bhānakas, development in Buddhist monasticism, emergence of Buddhist sects, growth of Buddhist rituals and concessions to popular religious needs, Aśoka and his contribution to the propagation of Buddhism in India and beyond. The study will focus on the progress of Buddhist culture in India for a few centuries after Aśoka on such aspects as Aśoka and expansion of Buddhism; the progress of Buddhism during the Śuńga-kānva period; development of Buddhist schools; the fourth Buddhist council; the Chinese pilgrims to India; great Buddhists after Aśoka including such rulers as Menader, Kaniska; Pali authors such as Nāgasena, Buddhadatta, and Buddhaghosa; Sanskrit authors such as Aśvaghosa, Nāgārjuna, Buddhapālita and Bhāvaviveka, Asańga and Vasubandhu, Dinnāga and Dharmakīrti; the rise of the great centres of Buddhist studies like Nālandā, Vikramaśilā, and Jagaddalā.

TB401 Tibetan Buddhism 3(3-0-6)
The study is intended as an introduction to the history and culture of Tibetan Buddhism incorporating the following aspects: original nature of the people and the land and its impact on religious thinking; basics of the new religion introduced into the land; flourishing of the native genius; Lamaist culture; uniqueness of Tibetan Art in the service of the religion; the growth of the Tibetan Buddhist literature.

BP307 Sarvastivada Abhidharma 3(3-0-6)
Prerequisites BT201&BH201
The course will begin with a clarification of Sarvastitva, the theory of tritemporal existence and its centrality to the Sarvāstivāda version of the dharma-theory. The main themes of discussion will include the category of atta-viprayukta-samskāra, theory of causes and conditions, momentariness and the causality of cognition, karma theory of avijñapti, and the unconditioned dharmas.

PL304 Pali: Prescribed Readings II 3(3-0-6)
Prerequisite PL201
The aim of this course is to introduce the student to the syntax and language style of the Pāli discourses and verses. Extracts from the prescribed texts will be set as exercises in comprehension and for translation into English.
Selections: Majjhima Nikāya I, Sutta numbers: 2, 3, 4, 9, 12 and Samyutta Nikāya I, Devatā Samyutta.

CB403 - School of Chinese Buddhism II (Tai tai)3 (3-0-6)

This study is designed to enable the students to gain a general
knowledge of the fundamental teachings of the T’ien T'ai School of
China and the Tendai School of Japan. It will make a historical survey
of the developments within the school and the influence it exerted on
the subsequent schools of Buddhist thought, both in China and Japan.

ME6102 Mahayana Buddhism (3 credits) (3-0-6)
This course aims at students without previous knowledge of Mahāyāna Buddhism. It provides an introduction to Mahāyāna Buddhism in the widest sense. After a brief look at the development of Buddhism in India after the death of the Buddha, this course concentrates on the historical, philosophical and religious origins of Mahāyāna Buddhism in India. These include the Bodhisattva ideal; Buddhological developments; the philosophical systematizations of the Mādhyamaka and Yogācāra schools; the reasons for the dominant position of Mahāyāna Buddhism in China and an investigation on the features of the newly emerged Mahāyāna modernism (i.e., Japanese Buddhism).

ME6103 History of Indian Buddhism (3 credits) (3-0-6)
The course gives a comprehensive coverage of Indian Buddhism from its origin to the decline and disappearance of Buddhism in India, with focus on the Nikāya Buddhism, the rising of Mahāyāna and its significance in the development of Chinese Buddhism.

ME6205 A Survey of the Doctrines of the Abhidharma Schools (3 credits) (3-0-6)
The period of Abhidharma Buddhism is of great importance for a proper perspective of the development of Indian Buddhism in general. It was essentially in this period that Buddhist ‘philosophy’ first evolved. Traditionally, there were said to be eighteen Abhidharma schools, sometimes also referred to as the Hīnayāna schools. This course will begin with an outline of the historical evolution of these schools, highlighting the doctrinal controversies that led to the schism at different schools. This will be followed by a survey of the fundamental doctrines of the more important schools in the northern tradition, particularly the Sarvāstivāda, the Sautrāntika, the Mahāsānghika and the Sāmmitīya.

这门课程将从大的历史发展进程来了解最具有中国特色的佛教宗派之一的禅宗,它将包括禅法的初 传,宗派的创立,禅系的分化等大的传弘转折期。还将从总的方面来论述各个时代以及各禅系的禅法特色,并对各阶段的代表性人 物作相应的介绍,包括他们的生平、禅法(思想与接机手法)、影响等,而相应的时代背景,如政治、经济等也应该有相应的介绍。

MC6205 阿毗达磨宗派理沦概观 (3学分) (3-0-6)
阿毗达磨佛教时期对于从整体上正确认识印度佛教的发展具有重要意义。从根本上讲,正是在这段时期佛教“哲学”首次涉及到。传统上认为一共有十八个阿毗达磨学派/部派,有时也被认为小乘部派。这门课程首先将略述这些学派的历史演变,突显那些导至不同部派分裂的教义上的争论。接着将概论北传中一些更为重要的部派的根本教义,特别是说一切有部、经量部、大众部和正量部。
