PL101 Pāli Grammar 1 3(3-0-6)
The course will introduce the student to the elementary rules of descriptive grammar: declension, conjugation, sandhi, samāsa (nominal compounds) and rules relating to the basic grammatical structure of a sentence.
SM106 Computer Literacy and Skills 3(2-2-3)
A study of the development of computer technology and its role in the future of society. An introduction to personal computing including topics such as hardware and software basics, word processing, Debase systems, electronic spreadsheets and Internet skills.
HU106 Thai Language and Culture 3(3-0-3)
A study of essential Thai Language as well as the origins and traditions of Thai culture and the values which undergird Thai cultural, socio – economic, political and religious structure. Consideration is also given to the impact of foreign cultures on Thailand in the past and the present.
BC101 Pre-Buddhist Indian Culture 3(3-0-6)
The course examines the social and religious culture in India before the Buddha focusing its especial attention on the following aspects: the Indus civilization and Aryans; Vedic culture; Brahmana and Śramana movements; social and religious institutions, practices and beliefs; the birth of Buddhist civilization as a response to its religious and social background.
BP201 Early Buddhism: Basic Doctrines 3(3-0-6)
The purpose of the course is to identify and interpret the original doctrines of what is generally known as Early Buddhism. Therefore the course will be mainly based on the Buddhist discourses of the Pāli Canon. Topics of study will include Four Noble Truths, Three Signs of Existence, Dependent Origination, Analysis of the empiric individuality, theory and practice of moral life, and Nibbāna as the final goal of religious life.
CB403 School of Chinese Buddhism-Tian Tai 3(3-0-6)
Prerequisite CB401
This study is designed to enable the students to gain a general knowledge of the fundamental teachings of the Tian Tai or T'ien T'ai School of China and the Tendai School of Japan. It will make a historical survey of the developments within the school and the influence it exerted on the subsequent schools of Buddhist thought, both in China and Japan.
BP409 Buddhism and other World Regions 3(3-0-6)
The course is intended as a comparative study of Buddhism in relation to Hinduism, Christianity and Islam. The primary focus of the course will be on the world-view of each religion and the spiritual life based on it. The purpose of the course is to promote inter-faith understanding among contemporary world-religions
BP305 Theravāda Abhidhamma 3(3-0-6)
Prerequisites BT201&BH201
The prime focus of the course will be on the dhamma-theory, the cornerstone of the Abhidhamma philosophy. The course will introduce students to the teachings of the Abhidhamma on levels of reality and degrees of truth, analysis of mind and matter, theory of ognition, instantaneous being, and conditional relations. The course will be concluded with-an introduction to the expository methodology of the Abhidhamma.
RB307 Buddhism in Thailand 3(3-0-6)
This course covers the rise and development of Buddhism in Thailand. It presents the interrelationships between Buddhism and Thai society. It includes various subtopics such as Buddhist influence in Thai politics, Thai education, Thai arts and architecture, etc. Contemporary issues regarding Buddhism in Thailand are also be discussed.
BP315 Yogācāra: The Buddhist Doctrine of Mind Only 3(3-0-6)
Prerequisite BT201&BH201
The course is designed as an introductory study of the basic teachings of the Idealistic School of Buddhism, known as Yogācāra Vijñānavāda. It will commence with a review of the antecedent idealistic trends in the pre-Mahāyāna schools and will be followed up with an introduction to the very essence of the Vijñānavāda metaphysics and the spiritual discipline based on it.
SK301 Sanskrit Grammar and Syntax 1 3(3-0-6)
The Devanāgarī alphabets and script; sandhi (internal and external); numerals (cardinals and ordinals); the conjugational classes I, IV, VI and X of thematic verbs in the present indicative; vowel gradation; prefixes and suffixes; declensional cases of nouns and pronouns of the three genders with vowel and consonant endings; introduction to Sanskrit samāsa (compounds) - dvanda, tadpurusa, karmadhāraya, bahuvrīhi; substantives and adjectives; adverbs; relative pronouns and indeclinablāes; the past passive participles; ātmanepada verb forms; passive construction; the future tense; the infinitive; the imperative and optative modes.

ME6101 Theravāda Buddhism (3 credits) (3-0-6)
The Buddha’s teachings recorded in the Pāli literature will be the main focus on this study. Attention is drawn to the definition of Theravāda Buddhism and the differences existing between Theravāda Buddhism and Early Buddhism, Early Buddhism and Pāli Buddhism. Candidates are expected to study the basic concepts of Theravāda Buddhism in comparison with the concepts of early Indian culture. The following concepts should be studied in detail: Buddha, Bodhisatta, Arahanta, Gods, Four Noble Truths, Dependent origination, Kamma and rebirth, Five Aggregates and twelve bases, cosmology, cultivation (bhāvanā) of mind and spiritual faculties.
ME6204 Pāli Literature (3 credits) (3-0-6)
A historical and critical survey of the origin and development of Pāli literature. An introduction to Theravāda Tipi5aka, with an emphasis on a historical survey of the division of the Buddha’s Teachings into Tipi5aka, the system of transmission of the Tipi5aka from time to time, structure and main points of the Tipi5aka. Special topics in Vinaya, Suttanta and Abhidhamma Pi5aka are included.
ME6211 Abhidharma Doctrines and Controversies (3 credits) (3-0-6)
The period of Abhidharma Buddhism witnesses some of the most important and innovative development in Buddhist thoughts. Accordingly, familiarity with the doctrinal categories of the Abhidharma, and with at least some of the major issues debated in this period, is a sine qua non for a proper understanding of the history of Buddhist thoughts. Such a familiarity is also indispensable for the understanding of the doctrinal evolution in the Mahāyāna in its proper perspective.
ME6215 Chinese Buddhist Thought: A Historical Perspective (3 credits) (3-0-6)
This course examines the Chinese development and interpretation of Buddhist thought in a historical perspective, with a special emphasis on the teachings and practices. The major figures and their contributions to the formation and development of schools, important and influential sūtras and the cults of important divinities will also be examined.

MC6101 南传上座部佛教(3学分) (3-0-6)
这门课程将主要集中研究记录于巴利文献中佛陀的教义。上座部佛教的定义,以及存在于上座部佛教和早期佛教,早期佛教和巴利文佛教之间的差异是本课程需要留意的地方。学生希望能够在与早期印度文化的对比中学习上座部佛教中的一些基本定义和概念。下列一些概念应该当详细学习:佛、菩萨、阿罗汉、神、四圣谛、缘起、业和转世、五蕴和十二处、世界、意根的修行。
MC6205 阿毗达磨宗派理沦概观(3学分) (3-0-6)
阿毗达磨佛教时期对于从整体上正确认识印度佛教的发展具有重要意义。从根本上讲,正是在这段时期佛教“哲学”首次涉及到。传统上认为一共有十八个阿毗达磨学派/部派,有时也被认为小乘部派。这门课程首先将略述这些学派的历史演变,突显那些导至不同部派分裂的教义上的争论。接着将概论北传中一些更为重要的部派的根本教义,特别是说一切有部、经量部、大众部和正量部。
MC6206 佛学研究的特别论题(1):佛教与中国文化(先秦至魏晋时期)(3 学分) (3-0-6)
佛教与儒家,道家是中国的主流思想文化 。其中,儒,道是中国本土文化,佛教是从印度传入中国。本课程介绍古代中国文化的根源与发展,由 先秦及魏晋时期的儒,道的形成与演变发展;与及佛教如何融合儒,道思想,成为中国文化的主流之一。课程将大致分为三个部分:
1.中國上古思想之趨勢與突破;
2.先秦儒家, 道家;
3.魏晉玄學及佛教的传入
