Kathina Celebration

On November 2nd 2015 International Buddhist College held the annual Kathina ceremony. Kathina, the traditional robe giving ceremony marking the end of the rainy season retreat, was observed in the chanting hall. The celebration served as an opportunity for the lay students from around the world to learn first hand about modern Buddhist cultural practices by organizing the event. For many students it was their first Kathina making it a powerful learning experience. Guests were in attendance from America and various other countries. The community involvement making the program possible greatly added to the quality of the shared experience.

The ceremony consisted of initial chanting by monks from various Buddhist traditions and a tremendous showing of support for the sangha by the community donating monastic and academic requisites. Following the ceremony, the group enjoyed an offered lunch for the occasion. Spirits were high throughout the entire event and several guests were distinctly moved by the experience. The observance of Kathina provided an invaluable experience for the students of IBC. Through their participation all members of the IBC community were capable of developing community values of cooperation and duty. More importantly still, the students’ academic experience in Buddhist studies is augmented and improved by the inclusion of traditional rituals and practices.

Kathina was a delightful occasion that showed the character of International Buddhist College and it’s students in full measure. Coming together to pay homage to the profound teachings and all Buddhist traditions, the bonds of camaraderie, community health, and mutual respect were reinforced. Our guests were shown the full scope of the collective good will and love present on campus and all people were treated to the realization that although we come from different backgrounds, we are united in the common causes of ethical livelihood, respect for others, and compassion for all suffering beings.
