Vegetarian Festival in Thailand
Reported by Ms. She Tengyuan and Ms. Upama, BA4 students
The Nine Emperor Gods Festival, also known as the 九皇盛会or Jiu Huang Ye Festival, is a nine-day vegetarian food festival. It is a significant religious event celebrated primarily by the Thai-Chinese community in Thailand.
The origins of the Nine Emperor Gods Festival can be traced back to ancient Chinese Daoist mythology. It starts on the eve of the ninth lunar month of the Chinese calendar, which usually coincides with September or October of the Gregorian calendar. The festival is dedicated to the Nine Emperor Gods, who are believed to descend to Earth during the ninth lunar month to cleanse the world of evil and bestow blessings upon their devotees. Participants engage in various rituals and ceremonies, including processions, prayers, and acts of purification. However, one of the most prominent practices during this festival is adopting a vegetarian diet for nine days.
It is heartening to note that some students from the International Buddhist College (IBC) actively participated in the Nine Emperor Gods Festival. Their involvement exemplifies the college's commitment to promoting intercultural awareness and understanding. By taking part in this traditional Taoist event, IBC students have gained a deeper appreciation of Chinese culture and demonstrated their dedication to the core Buddhist value of compassion and respect for all living creatures.
The participation of IBC students in the Nine Emperor Gods Festival is a testament to the power of cultural exchange. It exemplifies how individuals from different religious backgrounds can come together to appreciate and respect the beliefs and practices of others. Such exchanges foster mutual understanding and promote harmony in a diverse and interconnected world.
While the Nine Emperor Gods Festival is not inherently a Buddhist activity, the act of going vegetarian for nine days during the festival embodies a universal value that transcends religious boundaries - the value of protecting lives! This act is worthy of encouragement and appreciation, as it reflects the shared aspiration to live in harmony with the world and its inhabitants. In a time when our planet faces numerous environmental and ethical challenges, embracing such practices can have a positive impact on both the individual and global scale.
In conclusion, the Nine Emperor Gods Festival is a fascinating cultural and religious event that transcends religious boundaries, exemplifying the importance of protecting lives and practicing compassion. The participation of IBC students in this festival is a testimony to the value of cultural exchange and mutual respect. As we celebrate diversity and learn from one another's traditions, we can collectively strive for a more compassionate and harmonious world.
