Chinese New Year 2024 at International Buddhist College (IBC) Embracing the Year of the Dragon
Reported by Ms. She Tengyuan, BA4 student
Chinese New Year, or Lunar New Year, is a festival rich in tradition and symbolism that is celebrated with great fervour around the world. The Year of the Dragon, celebrated in 2024, brought with it the promise of strength, wisdom and prosperity, reflecting the dragon's revered status in Chinese culture. This year, IBC orchestrated a distinguished celebration on February 9, 2024 that not only rendered tribute to these deeply entrenched traditions, but also exemplified the ethos of unity and cultural interchange.
The celebration commenced with the host's warm opening remarks, extending her heartfelt wishes for prosperity in the Year of the Dragon to everyone gathered. This introduction set a thoughtful and joyous atmosphere for the festivities and encouraged attendees to welcome the New Year's transformative promises with hope and bravery.
Subsequently, the spotlight turned to Prof. Kapila Abhayawansa, who took the opportunity to express his appreciation for the teamwork of IBC members in ensuring the success of the function. His speech, filled with philosophical depth, prompted a moment of introspection and mindfulness among the audience. Sharing his blessings, Dr. Fa Qing, with his profound grasp of Chinese culture, delivered his speech in Mandarin, further enriching the event's cultural tapestry. Ven. Zhen Ti, contributing with genuine warmth, wished all members an auspicious and happy Chinese New Year. Besides that, she expressed her hope for all members to continue striving their best in practising the Dharma. Their speeches which were infused with wisdom and cultural understanding, underscored the celebration's aim to foster inclusivity, seamlessly connecting different languages and traditions. Ven. Zhen Ti also distributed red packets and New Year gifts to all members on behalf of IBC founder, Ven. Wei Wu.
Central to the celebrations was a feast of Chinese delicacies, where hot pots and dumplings that were prepared by Chinese students were the stars. The communal hot pot, a symbol of unity and diversity, and dumplings, a traditional New Year delicacy, provided culinary delight alongside an opportunity for cultural immersion and sharing. This communal meal is the essence of Chinese New Year's celebrations: bringing people together to share in the joy and abundance of the new year.
Adding to the festive atmosphere was the generosity of Malaysian donors, whose benevolence ensured each participant received a New Year gift through the lucky draws. This gesture of goodwill was more than just a tradition; it was a tangible expression of the community and shared happiness that the festival embodies. The gifts, while simple tokens, carried with them wishes of good luck and prosperity for the year ahead.
The event culminated in a group photo, a lasting reminder of the joy and camaraderie shared by those present. Capturing the diverse faces of the participants, the photo was a testament to the event's success in transcending cultural boundaries and fostering a sense of belonging and community. It was a fitting conclusion to a celebration that not only honoured the rich traditions of Chinese New Year, but also the spirit of inclusivity and mutual respect that defines IBC.
Reflecting on the occasion, it was evident that the Chinese New Year 2024 celebration at IBC was more than just an observance of cultural rituals. It was not only a vibrant expression of universal hopes and dreams of what the new year will bring, but a celebration of cultural heritage and shared human values. As we move forward in the Year of the Dragon, the memories of this celebration remind us of the enduring power of tradition that unite and inspire us, encouraging us to move forward in our spiritual practices.
Last but not least, we would like to express our appreciation to Ven. Dhammanandi and Malaysian donors for their generosity; as well as all IBC members who were involved either directly or indirectly, for the success of the event. We hope that this event will continue to be carried out in the future for the good of the many.
Thank you!
