Memorial Messages

Great Loss to the Academic Field
The death of Prof. Jamspal is undoubtedly a great loss to the academic world specifically in the field of Tibetan Buddhism. I knew him well as he was my colleague for many years at the International Buddhist College. He was not only a pious Buddhist but also an exemplary person for all humanity. He displayed the highest human qualities:honesty, sincerity, mercifulness, friendliness and loving-kindness.
May he attain soon a blissful state of Nibbana.

Geshe Lozang Jamspal was one of the great good fortunes of IBC. I am glad I had the opportunity to meet such a person in this life; I had heard of him much before I met him, as he was a friend of my teacher, Prof. Rāṁśaṅkar Tripāṭhī. When I finally had the chance to meet Geshe Jamspal, it became immediately clear why Tripāṭhī Gurujī and others spoke of him so highly and so fondly. It is to me particularly meaningful that less than two weeks ago Geshe La blessed a Dharma gathering in Ladakh, where the Sanskrit Heart Sūtra was chanted. I am very grateful to Geshe Lozang Jamspal for all his guidance and unfailing kindness.

We are very sorry to hear about Prof. Jamspal's death. It was a great loss for Buddhism. We would like to extend our deepest sympathies to his family members. We pray for him to be reborn and continue his path to Buddhahood. Professor Jamspal was a compassionate and sincere human being with a warm personality, a real Bodhisattva, a model for others to follow. I have learned many things from him which affect my life. Here is my vivid image of him: whenever you met him in the campus, in the mornings and evenings, on the way to the canteen, he always carried a plastic bag with him and picked up all the garbage he saw. He shared his income with students by offering dana and money to all equally. He always chanted mantras and greeted people with a smile.

It was really sad news to hear that Prof Jamspal has passed away. He was a senior Professor who came to IBC after serving in USA for some time. When he was in IBC, I was in the room next to him, and we became very intimate friends. Every evening, we would walk around the campus. After he left IBC to return to his country, I frequently asked Sonam about his health condition.
When I heard the sad news, I reflected upon the impermanent nature of things in this world. That same day in the evening, we chanted and transferred merit to Prof. Jamspal. We prayed for his journey towards the end of samsāra.

Very sorry to hear this news. May his journey along the path of enlightenment be
accomplished, and may he return to guide the samsaric beings!

Some Meaningful Moments with Prof. Lobzang Jamspal
Reported by: Mr. Kala Baran Chakma, MA graduate

The first time I met Professor Jamspal was in 2019, he was very conscious of using time meaningfully. He was someone who upheld cleanliness and conservation of the environment. Every morning, while walking, he would collect discarded plastic bags and paper. Our Professor was sending us a meaningful message. We should learn from him.

Unfortunately, at the end of 2020, his health deteriorated as he had reached the age when most health crises tend to happen. Despite his health issues, he never stopped reading and discussing his translation work over Skype with his friends from USA. He never let his poor health interfere with his work.

I am happy to have the opportunity to serve him as a personal assistant in IBC. I was blessed to have the opportunity to serve Professor in his time of need. Lastly, I would like to say that Professor Jamspal practiced what he preached. I really respect him. He was energetic and very disciplined.

Thank you, Professor, for all your kindness and guidance to me. May Professor attain the Bliss of Nibbana.
