Second Phase of the “English is Fun” Class (17-18/8/2024 and 24-25/8/2024)
International Buddhist College (IBC) organized the second phase of the “English is Fun” class on August 17-18, 2024, instructed by Bro. Ong Beng Chung, Sis. Wong Ping Ling and Ms. Wong Siew Queen for both the Preliminary and Intermediate classes.
On the first day, the teachers focused on teaching speaking skills using a class-engagement approach. Students paired up and played their roles while the teachers typed out their conversations on the spot, corrected their grammar mistakes and provided feedback.
The following day, Bro. Ong conducted a Sentence Scramble contest where students had to reorganize three sentences into correct grammatical order and meaning.
On August 24-25, 2024, Sis. Ping Ling and Bro. Ong Beng Chung continued their teaching on writing skills through Essay Writing. The teachers explained Essay Structure, Drafting, Essential Phrases, and Paragraphing. After that, students were tasked with writing a 150-word essay in 30 minutes. The essays were marked based on a scheme that included Essay Structure (10 points), Content (20 points), Essential Phrases (5 points), Sentence Structure (5 points), Grammar (5 points) and Punctuation (5 points).
The next day, four of the best essays were selected. The essays were reviewed using a class-engagement approach, with students providing input on errors, and Bro. Ong commented on the strengths and areas needing improvement in the selected essays. The tutors then held one-on-one discussions with each student about their essays. The sessions ended with a prize-giving ceremony for the five best essays.
Finally, the second phase of the “English is Fun” class concluded with a group photo session. In summary, the students were enthusiastic about learning and greatly benefited from the teachers' guidance in improving their speaking and writing skills.
A big thank you to all the teachers.
