In Memoriam: Prof. Dr. Kapila Abhayawansa (1938-2024)
We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Prof. Dr. Kapila Abhayawansa, who left us on the morning of August 31, 2024, at the International Buddhist College (IBC), Thailand, at the age of 86. Prof. Dr. Abhayawansa was a distinguished Vice Rector and Professor at IBC, whose exceptional contributions to Buddhist education and the community have left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of meeting and learning from him.
Prof. Dr. Abhayawansa specialised in Pāli, Sanskrit, Sinhala, Buddhist Philosophy, Vinaya, and both distinctive Western and Indian Philosophy. He earned his Master of Philosophy from Banaras Hindu University, India, and his Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka. He served as a Senior Lecturer and Head of the Department of Buddhist Culture at the Postgraduate Institute of Pāli and Buddhist Studies, University of Kelaniya. The late erudite professor was also a Visiting Lecturer at various universities in Sri Lanka and abroad.
Affectionately known as Prof. Kapila, he authored over fifteen academic books and over a hundred academic articles. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time. Besides that, we would like to express our deepest appreciation and gratitude to Prof. Dr. Kapila Abhayawansa for his invaluable service and dedication to IBC and Buddhism.
Thank you, Professor. You will be greatly missed by all of us. May Professor attain a favourable rebirth and attain nibbāna swiftly.
