Reported by: Sayalay Obhasi, MA student

The funeral service for our respected Professor Dr. Kapila Abhayawansa (1938–2024) was held in Sri Lanka on 7th September 2024. It took place at the Sri Lanka Nippon Educational and Cultural Centre located in Mahindarama Temple. The funeral was attended by many high-ranking monks, university professors, Professor Kapila’s former colleagues, students, relatives and neighbours.

After his passing on 31st August, Prof. Kapila's body was kept at Wat Yang Thong, Khlong Ngae, while waiting for his son's arrival to send him back to Sri Lanka. On the following day, 1st September 2024, with sadness and gratitude, all lecturers, staff and students came together to pay their respects to the late Prof. Kapila with chanting from the three traditions. During the sharing session, Prof. Kapila's son, Mr. Subhash expressed that while he felt deep sadness, he also found consolation because his father spent his entire life doing what he was passionate about.

On 3rd September, before his departure to Sri Lanka, Prof. Kapila's hearse stopped in front of the IBC main building, where all lecturers, staff and students paid their final respects. Additionally, the lecturers and staff accompanied Professor Kapila on his last journey to Hatyai Airport.

The International Buddhist College (IBC) would like to express our deepest appreciation for all the support given during Prof. Kapila's funeral.

May the blessings of the Triple Gem be with Professor always, and may he attain the bliss of Nibbana. We deeply appreciate Professor's great teachings and contributions to the Buddha Sasana.

Thank you, Professor. You will always be in our hearts!
