Teaching English in a Thai School

Reported by: Ven. Xian Gan, MA1 student
International Buddhist College (IBC) arranged for us to teach English in a Thai school every Monday from August 19 to October 7, 2024. I am one of the selected students. The objectives of this program are to enhance the English language skills of Thai students and boost their confidence in speaking English. This endeavor provides an avenue for sharing knowledge and exposes us to Thai culture as well.

Initially, we faced significant challenges as the Thai language posed a barrier for both us and the students. Besides that, the students spoke very little English, making even basic class instructions difficult. Furthermore, many were shy and fearful of making mistakes. This prompted us to refine our teaching strategies through the use of visual aids and interactive activities such as games and songs. We also rewarded the students with small gifts and praises whenever they showed progress.

Over time, with patient support, never criticizing or showing any hint of displeasure over their mistakes, the students gradually began to speak up and share laughs with us. These methods transformed the classroom into a lively and dynamic space where students felt motivated to participate.

Last but not least, the teaching experiences were both challenging and deeply fulfilling. In fact, seeing the students' progress has been incredibly rewarding and joyful. We learned that effective teaching involves building connections and providing encouragement as much as it does impart knowledge. We are grateful to IBC for the opportunity given to us to teach English in a Thai school. It has positively impacted the lives of these students, even in a very small way. We hope this program continues for their benefit.
