My Experiences in IBC (4) Ven. Qi Feng (China)

I am currently pursuing a Ph.D program in Buddhist Studies in the English medium at the International Buddhist College (IBC). Before coming to IBC, I had never considered studying abroad, let alone using English as the medium for learning Buddhism. Initially, I planned to join the Chinese program, but after taking an English test and receiving a favorable result, I decided to challenge myself and enroll in the English program.

At first, I struggled with comprehension, both in listening and reading. However, with the support of my teachers and classmates, I gradually improved. Over time, I became fluent in communication and made significant progress in my English skills. After completing my undergraduate studies, I chose to continue my education in the English-medium graduate program. My goal is to use English to share the Dharma with Buddhist practitioners from different countries. This aspiration has motivated me to persevere in my studies and deepen my knowledge of Buddhism.

IBC is a unique and inclusive institution that integrates teachings from three major Buddhist traditions - Mahāyāna, Vajrayana, and Theravāda. Studying here has broadened my understanding of Buddhism, not only in terms of depth but also in comprehensiveness. It has also helped me overcome certain misconceptions about Theravāda Buddhism. This exposure to different traditions is one of IBC’s greatest strengths.

Additionally, IBC offers courses in Buddhist languages such as Sanskrit, Pāli, and Tibetan. I have also taken the opportunity to learn some Thai. These language skills have enriched my learning experience and enhanced my ability to access Buddhist texts in their original languages.

Another remarkable aspect of IBC is its holistic support for students. The college provides accommodation and meals, including vegetarian options, which are important for those following the Mahāyāna tradition. In many Theravāda Buddhist countries, universities do not offer vegetarian meals or on-campus housing, making IBC stand out as a welcoming and supportive environment for monastic and lay students alike. With these necessities taken care of, students can focus entirely on their studies and practice.

I am deeply grateful to IBC, its founder, Venerable Dr. Wei Wu, Than Hsiang Temple, the Than Hsiang Foundation, our dedicated teachers, and all staff members. Their generosity and support, both financially and academically, have enabled us to study without worries. Thanks to their contributions, we can dedicate ourselves fully to learning and practicing the Dharma.

My experience at IBC has been transformative, and I have gained profound knowledge and personal growth. I sincerely invite all those interested in Buddhist studies to join IBC. Let us learn together, support one another, and work towards spreading the Dharma for the benefit of all.

Thank you.
