Effective Written Communication on PACC

Reported by: Yang Xueqin, BA2 student
This report aims to highlight a special communication lesson given by Mdm. Lim Wai Lee, an experienced educator from Singapore for us on 1st August 2025. Mdm. Lim is currently a career coach in the Ministry of Education in Singapore. Prior to that, she spent 36 years in education; serving in the School of Science and Technology and Raffles Girls Secondary School in Singapore. She has a Bachelor of Arts and a Masters' Degree (Applied Linguistics) from the National University of Singapore.

The focus of her lesson was on the Components of Effective Communication; PACC which are namely, purpose, audience, context of culture and context of situation. The aim of this approach is to help us understand the concept of genre or text-types in language use so that we will be able to read or create texts for different purposes.

Mdm. Lim ensured that we were active learners. She designed tasks that required us to be active participants. For example, she made students co-constructor of classroom norms by inviting us to come up with our own rules in the classroom to ensure deeper learning. She also prepared personal whiteboards for us so that we would be able to use it for brainstorming and note-taking of our discussions. This way, we were given an opportunity to contribute to the class discussions and in doing so, be more actively engaged in our learning.

Furthermore, Mdm. Lim shared some of her experiences and life-story with us to encourage us to persevere in our learning, despite challenges. We also candidly shared our feelings and experience of learning in her classroom. In this special lesson on communication, we developed more confidence in speaking and expressing ourselves in English as a result of the strategies used in the class that day. Conversely, Mdm. Lim also shared that she learned more about us over the course of the day and adjusted her teaching methods accordingly.

In conclusion, the visiting lecturer and students learned from one another in a safe and happy environment. We thank Mdm. Lim for her effort and special care for us. May the blessings of the Triple Gem always be with her.
