A Visit to Mama Temple: Experiencing the Zhongyuan Festival

Reported by: Sayalay Obhasi (MA2 student)
On September 6th, a few students from the International Buddhist College (IBC) visited the nearby Mama Temple to participate in the Zhongyuan Festival (中元节). The temple, with its distinctive and elegant Chinese-style architecture, offered a serene atmosphere. Walking along its broad pathways inspired a sense of peace and joy.

The Zhongyuan Festival ceremony commenced at around 10 a.m. This festival is observed annually on the 15th day of the seventh lunar month (typically in August or September) in Chinese tradition. It is also known as the Ghost Festival or Hungry Ghost Festival. The purpose of the festival is to honour ancestors, appease wandering spirits, and perform meritorious deeds through offerings made at the temple.

The temple prepared a wide variety of food for worship on this occasion. We joined the ceremony by participating in the Theravāda chanting session for about one hour. After that, we were invited to enjoy a sumptuous lunch. Before returning to IBC, we also assisted with some community tasks at the temple.

Overall, the visit was a meaningful trip. Besides gaining educational experiences, it provided us with valuable insights into Chinese cultural and religious traditions. Thanks to all members for this great opportunity to visit Mama Temple.
