Chinese Language Class
Reported by: Nayani Bag, MA1 student
The International Buddhist College (IBC) organized a Chinese language class from 4 August to 29 September 2025 as part of this academic year’s program. The class was conducted from 9:00am to 10:00 a.m. in the C4 Classroom. A total of six students participated, under the guidance of the instructor, Ms. Beh Mei Li.
The instructor introduced us to Hanyu Pinyin (拼音), which literally means “to spell out the sound.” Hanyu Pinyin is the most widely adopted romanization system for Mandarin Chinese and is officially recognized as such, with Hanyu meaning “the Chinese language.” In addition to Pinyin, we learned a variety of Chinese vocabulary applicable to different contexts. As the Mooncake celebration approaches, we also learned the song 月亮圆 (“The Moon is Round”) and prepared to perform it in sign language during the celebration.
The program proved highly beneficial to us. Learning Chinese provides valuable linguistic knowledge and enabling us to have direct communication with our Chinese friends with confidence. It is also particularly advantageous for the practice of Chinese chanting.
Last but not least, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to the International Buddhist College for arranging this program for us. Special appreciation is also extended to Ms. Beh Mei Li for her commitment and effective teaching. We hope that IBC will continue to provide such programs in the future to further enhance students’ linguistic and cultural knowledge.
Thank you.
