Manora Traditional Dance

Reported by Nayani Bag (MA1 student)
On 1st May 2026, we had a wonderful opportunity to watch a traditional Manora dance performance, kindly arranged by our Thai staff, Sister Mod, at her home. Her brother, who is a master performer, led the performance. Manora dance (also known as Nora dance) is a traditional performing art from southern Thailand and is considered one of the most important cultural dances in the region. It is a classical dance-drama that combines dance, music, singing, and storytelling, often based on ancient folklore and spiritual beliefs.

The performers wore colourful and captivating costumes, including decorative crowns and long golden fingernails that enhanced the elegance and expressiveness of their hand movements. The performance was accompanied by traditional musical instruments, creating a lively and rhythmic atmosphere. Every moment was graceful and full of meaning, and we truly enjoyed the experience.

The performance was deeply captivating, and the hospitality we received was warm and heartfelt. The pleasant evening atmosphere created a peaceful and refreshing environment, making the entire experience even more enjoyable and memorable. We were also kindly invited to share dinner together.

This was a beautiful and unique cultural experience that helped us better understand the rich heritage and traditions of the region. It also deepened our appreciation for the importance of preserving traditional arts like Manora, as they reflect the identity, history, and spiritual values of the local community. The experience inspired us to learn more about Thai culture and to respect its deep-rooted traditions.

Last but not least, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to our Thai staff for making this visit possible and for their kind hospitality. We are also deeply thankful to International Buddhist College for providing us with such an unexpected, meaningful, and memorable experience. Thank you.
