Our Experience of Teaching English at a Thai School
Reported by Usha Meghwal (MA1 student)
The International Buddhist College (IBC) has made an effort to provide its academic service to society through teaching English to Thai school students. This semester, the service was given on every Wednesday from 5th August to 14th September at Thairath 80 School. The syllabus was designed to cover basic understanding of reading, speaking, writing, vocabulary and grammar.
We had the opportunity to take part in this service and gained some new experiences while teaching the students vocabulary, grammar, speaking and simple writing. While teaching, we tried to create a friendly environment so that every student could participate in the teaching-learning process. Besides that, we used activity-based teaching methods which involved role play to get active participation from the students. This made the lessons more interesting and the students enjoyed the classes.
We observed that every student has different learning capacity which challenge our ability to teach them. After some adjustments, we gradually succeeded in attracting the students’ interest to study English. Moreover, we tried to encourage the students to speak and answer simple questions in a correct way. Small rewards were given as a motivation for them to keep studying English. It helped to build up their confidence as well.
In conclusion, we would like to express our appreciation to International Buddhist College for giving us the opportunity to teach English at the Thai school. Besides gaining new experiences, we will reflect on our own limitations in order to benefit the students in the future.
