Course Organization: 

The course would be organized based on lectures and discussion of Pāli Grammar applying usages in structural sentences. Students are expected to attend assignments, Presentations and examinations. The 45-hour course covers the following classes: The basic grammars will be applied to all suttas from the first lecture to the end.

  • Lecture 1: Review the structure of Pāli language, i.e. Declension of nouns and Conjugations of seven classes, participles, compounds etc.
  • Lecture 2- 12: Majjhima Nikāya, Vol.1.

    1. Sabbāsavasutta: to understand the dispelling of all defilements through Seven practices, i.e. dassanā, saṃvarā, paṭisevanā, adhivasanā, parivajjanā, vinodana and bhāvanā.

    2. Dhammadāyādasutta: to grasp how a bhikkhu becomes an heir of Dhamma of The Buddha and how a bhikkhu becomes a heir of the material things of the Buddha; and then what a bhikkhu will undergo as a heir of Dhamma of the Buddha, and as a heir of the material things of the Buddha.

    3. Bhayabheravasutta: To investigate what is the reason of arising of fear and dread While a bhikkhu secluded in the forest.

  • Lecture 13 to 15: Saṃyutta Nikāya, Vol.1. Devatāsaṃyutta of Sagāthāvagga.
Course Requirements: 

Students should be present in a minimum of 80% of the scheduled classes to be eligible to sit for the written examinations: the mid-term and the Final written examinations. All students must do whatever assignment given, and should focus on grasping the massage of suttas based on linguistically structure.

Course Objectives: 

From the course, it is expected that the students will build up the foundation of Pāli grammar
in preparation for higher learning and usage of the Pāli language, the language of the Pāli
Canon.
